An introduction to Green Light
Green Light is one of two Blackpool projects bidding for funding from the Big
Lottery's Living Landmarks Fund. Green Light is entered into the fifty million
pound category
whilst 'The Peoples Playground' is entered into the twenty
million pound category.
The fifty million pound category has only one winner, it's a competition in other words,
to create a new living landmark in Great Britain. As the title "Living Landmarks"
suggests, it is about creating a landmark for the people and importantly; with the people. The chances of winning are small but we decided we had to enter, and we believe we can win.
Project timetable
The project has been assessed by the Big Lottery and over the next few months
will
be reviewed further with other bids. In June we find out if we have been
short listed
and if this is the case we will be given funds by the Big Lottery to develop
the project further.
In January 2007 the short listed projects will submit a second application and then
be reduced to just 5 which will go forward to a televised vote later that year.
The winners will receive up to fifty million pounds towards their project.
What is Green Light?
Green Light is a project that has been created in response to consultation with Blackpool residents during Masterplanning... we responded as well to successful community involvement in the 2005 Festival of Light, part of the Blackpool Illuminations.
The Project Team identified a variety of needs in the Blackpool community which it felt could be met by building on Blackpool's rich heritage of innovation in the fields of
lighting design and power generation. These needs were...
to build a new living landmark that people can be proud of
to create a catalyst for regeneration in the Town
to offer facilities which will support, retain and foster creative talent in Blackpool
to develop a cleaner, greener Blackpool
to increase opportunities for all through learning about lighting and energy
The response has been... Green Light, a four-strand project that helps build communities and regenerate Blackpool, sustained through a year round attraction.
Speed of Light: an iconic new landmark building in the heart of Blackpool will be the first centre of its kind in Europe, showcasing new inventions in the areas of creative lighting and power generation. It will concentrate on low emission and green energy projects such as wave and wind power and the latest inventions in lighting technology. The Centre will offer a wide programme of learning opportunities to Blackpool residents.
The Illuminations Experience: a year-round indoor visitor attraction presenting the magic of the World famous Blackpool Illuminations in a controlled environment, integrated into Blackpool Transport's tram operation.
The Light Lab: a research and development department together with business incubator units for artists and technologists working in lighting and creative industries.
100 satellite lighting projects: permanent lighting installations throughout Blackpool that will improve the built environment and create safer places to live.
Blackpool has a lot to be proud of and while the Town needs to modernise and move forward, its past is its strength and we must use this to build the future. It’s about real building blocks, not just projects. So what is Green Light aiming to bring to Blackpool?
pride
opportunity
new ideas
energy
learning
